In a simple ceremony hosted by the Department of Tourism held last February 13 at Seawind Resort Boracay MSV’s Owner and Managing Director, Dieter Schrottmann, received the ASEAN Green Hotel Award Plaque from Atty. To celebrate this achievement, MSV will continue with their green initiatives such as corporate tree planting and team building excursions, eco gifts and certificates to encourage others to participate, sharing wellness with the community by offering complementary yoga classes for elementary schools, free prenatal yoga classes for community members, joining beach cleanup activities, and so on. The regional winners will then progress to the Grand Final at the end of the year.

So many of us wish we had the luxury to spend more time and money on our wellbeing, the willpower to listen to our bodies’ pleas for mercy, and a refuge that can take the burden of our health on their shoulders and just tell us what the heck to do!
 
Whether you lead a healthy lifestyle or are guilty of making less than ideal choices (READ: fast food over freshly prepared food, smoking over breathing to relieve stress, indulging over restraint), our bodies accumulate toxins that weaken our immune system or our body’s natural defense against disease, resulting in poor health and sluggish senses and organ function. The good news is that it never too late to get back in shape!
 
Thanks to Mandala Spa & Villas’ (MSV) brilliant Mandala Day Detox, the overwhelming task of a detoxification program becomes a joyful day of frolicking and relaxing in Boracay while immersing in a liberal detox package customized for you, no matter where you stay on the island. For a Boracay resident like myself, Mandala’s Day Detox (MDD) left me with no excuse but to finally indulge in a much-needed break from my active “I’ve got no time” lifestyle, with their simple, enjoyable and straightforward approach to wellness.

 
Inspired by Dr. Richard Anderson’s world famous detox and cleansing diet, this 24-hour cleanse and rejuvenation plan expels toxins, boosts the immune system and indulges in world famous spa treatments. Another first in holistic wellness, Mandala Spa wanted to make the detox experience accessible and more affordable to a broader spectrum of individuals and to introduce the concept of a detox, without having to check-in at the world-renowned spa resort.  According to MSV’s founder and owner, Dieter Schrottmann, “When it comes to health, we are all for opening our doors to as much people out there who want it.” MDD is a gentle detox that jump-starts the system and delivers remarkable and instantly felt results without breaking the buck.
 
So here’s how it goes. ……
 
 
Step one: Prepare.
The whole process starts with a guest inquiry and interview. The detox advisor goes over the guests’ health profile via a client detox questionnaire and the advisor clarifies any concerns and informs the client of what to expect and how to prepare for “the big day,” including a “do it yourself pre-cleanse plan” (ideally a two- to three-day raw food diet) and a helpful list of Boracay restaurants that serve fresh salads and vegetarian dishes. The client may choose between a Dan Tien Therapy and a Lymph Drainage Massage which are both designed to help the elimination process.

 
On the eve of your detox day, you will receive a personal health assessment at Mandala Spa. This includes nutrient counseling, a vital sign check, imported herbal supplements and a freshly prepared liver and gall-bladder flush to ease your body into the detox day proper. The guest is then given their Personalized Wellness Plan, which is a detailed schedule they are to follow the following day.  Everything you will need will be prepared for you and Mandala’s detox advisors and staff will be on-hand every step of the way to provide support, although I found it to be quite liberating to be given the responsibility to immerse in the process on my own. In fact, in hindsight, the out-stay self-detox allowed me to internalize my detox, making it a very powerful personal experience.
 
Step two: Expel.
Your next morning appointment at Mandala Spa includes a refreshing shot of wheatgrass juice (considered liquid oxygen), fresh juice of your choice, and an optional yoga session I highly recommend you avail of, to condition the mind and body for the detox.
A picnic basket is prepared for you to take out which contains hunger-killing psyllium shakes to dislodge and speed-up the elimination of toxins, a sumptuous and completely satisfying vegetable broth, imported top-of-the-line herbal supplementsthat support the digestive system, fresh juices to keep your blood sugar in check, and natural and freshly prepared tonics robust with the power of fresh enzymes. Surprisingly, I never felt deprived or hungry, despite gnawing urges to satisfy my oral fixations. If anything, the detox menu was so filling and I felt quite victorious for overcoming myself!
 
Step three: Eliminate.

This part addresses the internal elimination of waste products and toxins, which are now floating around bloodstream and colon. Sometime in the late afternoon or early evening, one avails of their choice of Mandala Spa therapy followed by the highly anticipatedand most important part of the detox day, the Mandala Colema or manual colon irrigation, in the privacy of a spa villa. At the exit interview, the detox advisor and client post-assess the detox journey, addressing any questions and the client receives a post-detox nutrition talk and diet guide to help in the transition out of the detox process. The island-wide contest, now on its second year, encourages the use of centers for composting, and recycling and is geared on promoting environmentally-sound waste management.

Thirty-three Boracay resorts and business establishments participated in the program and were judged on various criteria — environmental education for employees; function and aesthetics of Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs); operation and monitoring of waste segregation; collection, composting and recycling schemes; and creativity and sustainability.
